Free DJ Software - Mixxx - Overview (Alternative to Virtual DJ)

Mixxx it's a free and open source DJ software that runs on Windows, Mac and Linux. It can be a great alternative to Virtual DJ or Traktor. This DJ software is compatible with many MIDI controllers and it's avaliable in many languages.

What is Mixxx?

Mixxx is free mixing software for DJs, providing everything needed to create live mixes. It allows you to beatmatch songs and crossfade them together, like you would with turntables and a mixer.

So far i think Mixxx in a good DJ tool and i hope they keep improving with time to conquer the dance music world leaving the paid software behind.
To help with that i leave here some suggestions:
- Improve Sync mechanism with better beat detection in the songs
- Improve the FX feature
- Allow record in sampler
- Allow zoom of songs waveform

Tenminmix Competition by Dj Tutor

Tenminmix it's a competition from DJ Tutor that happens every month and the best mixes with ten minutes or less win some prizes. But the whole point of the competition it's not the prizes, it's to put everyone training their mixes and sharing them with the world. I leave here a mix from the 3rd place in November competition.

Mixing in key - An help to build a smooth set

So i already posted here some tutorials on Virtual DJ, that is a DJ Software that allows you to play musics and mix them like a professional DJ.
So now it's time to talk about another important topic, key, that will be very helpfull when you start creating you set. To have a very smooth mix between to songs, besides the bmp (beats per minute) that must be similar (you already noticed that), they should have a similar key because because it will be easier to mix and will sound better most of the times.

I will try to do a series of tutorial soon on how to begin constructing your mixes and your sets but for now i leave here some videos that explain the importance of the mixing in key. Those videos are from DJ Tutor (ellaskins youtube channel).

So as promissed i will start uploading tutorials of mixing with Vitual DJ but since i'am not having much time i leave here one that i found on youtube. This video shows a really easy and simple transition between two songs that can be very usefull in a mix.
